University Admission and Enrollment

If your main supervisor is appointed professor at one of our partner universities, you will, most often, register there. Otherwise, you have the option to register at the partner university, where your co-supervisor is appointed.

University admission (Promotion) and enrollment (Immatrikulation) is a 2-step process: for admission you submit to the faculty of your choice a signed supervision agreement, degree transcripts and certificates, a brief project proposal, etc. Upon acceptance of your PhD project by the Doctorate Board, you receive your admission letter with which of you can start the enrolment process and  complete the registration of your PhD. Since admission and enrolment are independent units, you must  submit your paperwork twice. You have 4 weeks to complete enrolment from the date of admission printed on your admission letter. All HEIBRiDS doctoral researchers are expected to complete the admission and enrolment process within the first 6 months of starting their PhD project and send a copy of the admission letter to the HEIBRiDS Office before the first Thesis Advisory Committee (TAC) meeting.

For details on documents to be submitted visit the pages of each individual university .

Semester Ticket for Public Transport

Students can purchase a semester ticket as part of the fees required by the university every semester. After paying the fees, the student ID, which acts simultaneously as the semester ticket, is sent by mail. This ticket is valid in the entire ABC zone of Berlin-Brandenburg (VBB) and allows its holder to use all public transportation options, taking children (under the age of 6) without additional costs, luggage, a dog, a stroller, and a bicycle.

Here you can find information on the Semester Ticket and on upgrading it for "Deutschlandticket" (page not available in English).

Attention in case you are enrolled at TU Berlin! Since October 1st, 2023 TU Berlin is not supporting the Semester Ticket anymore. The tuition fees per semester are now lower. Find more information here.
